Shoving Poetry

So I'm working on a sonnet for my next assignment. I have to submit poem or poems totalling 40 lines but the 5% margin allows me up to 42. Which is very handy as I've completed one that comes to 28 lines and no matter what I try I seem unable to write something of precisely 12 lines. I was intending to write something in free verse but all my attempts are utter tripe so I've gone back to form and structure.

So like I said, I'm working on a sonnet. I'm nearly there. It's called 'Shrove Tuesday'. I'm stuck on the thirteenth line and don't know how to finish it off. Foolishly I asked the Captain ...

'Shove Tuesday? Why would you want to Shove Tuesday??'

He then danced around the room singing 'Waterloo' by Abba having mistaken my rhyme scheme as an invitation to song. I should know better, I really should ...

Still, on another note, I've been given more awards! I know!! The witty Rotten Correspondent has given me this:

And it goes with the following instructions: I love being a part of the blogging community and part of all the friendships that I've formed so I wanted to give a blog award for all of you out there that have Excellent Blogs. By accepting this Excellent Blog Award, you have to award it to 10 more people whose blogs you find Excellent Award worthy. You can give it to as many people as you want but please award at least 10.

and so without further ado I'll pass it on to the following most excellent bloggers:

Jo Beaufoix, Mzungu Chick, Midlifer, Rainbow, Holly, Single Mother on the Verge, Swearing Mother, Tina, Riverwillow and Barbara

And even more excitement, the delightful Sweet Irene has given me another Mwha :o)

and as I forgot the include the instructions with my post yesterday I shall do so now: It’s a big kiss, of the chaste, platonic kind, from me to you with the underlying ‘thanks’ message implied. I really do appreciate your support and your friendship, and yes, your comments.’

and so I'm now giving it to even more people:

Avery, Brunhilde, Crystal, Stinking Billy, Dumdad and Aims

If I've missed anyone out I am very sorry and help yourselves anyway :o)

um, the captain sounds very much like a certain husband of mine.

no one is able to write anything that is precisely 12 lines. it's called the dodecanowrite effect. i await your result.

and thank you! FINALLY i can upgrade from my former rating of "c for crappy!" niiiice.

Yay. Congrats on the awards, and thank you soooo much.
And I love the image of the captain dancing around to Abba. Lovely.

Thank you so much for the Mwah - I love kisses!

I'd give you some of my poetry to use but I don't think you'd want it....

Sonnet writing must be very difficult, because you are always following in the steps of the legendary Shakespeare. Especially when you are English and he is your national bard.

We have something of the equivalent here in the Netherlands, but nothing can compare to the famous William, whoever he was and turns out to be.

I used to write free verse and some of it was okay. Some of it was pure drivel and full of sentiment and nostalgia for people and places that were unattainable.

I used to write very bad poetry when I was depressed. Thank goodness those days are over. I mean, I still get depressed, but I don't feel compelled to write anything down anymore. Such nonsense!

Gosh Belle - Thanks so much for award, I've never had one of those. I shall wear it with pride.

And jolly big congrats to you too. Well deserved I say. Good luck with the poetry. I feel for you. I haven't a clue to get two words to flow together - never mind a couple of paragraphs!

Many thanks Belle, and of course to my family, friends and all who have encouraged me... Re the poem - dare you to submit a poem by a famous poet and see if tutor notices!

ooh, isn't that nice! Mwah back to you too!

The line limit was a real pain last year! I got caught out once, going way over because I got my sums wrong...

Congrats on your awards. You absolutely deserve them.

I would be honored to be linked! Can I also link you??

Holly - I'm quoting you in my commentary 'I went over the line limit because of the dodecanowrite effect ...' should work, I think?

Dumdad - you're welcome

Jo - the Captain, dancing and Abba - I promise it's better in your head ;o)

Aims - oh I don't know ... at this stage I'll take all the help I can get!

Sweet Irene - having come to terms with realising that my poetry is utter tripe, sonnet writing isn't so bad - my expectations of it are so low I can't fail to fulfill them :o)

Mzungu - feel for my tutor, it's her I worry for ...

Brunhilde - it's tempting, but I think my tutor's pretty on the ball, sadly ...

Cailleach - line limit, pah! limiting creativity that's what it is ...;o)

RC - Love to be linked, thanks :o))

As an escape from my studies, I go every evening to the Money Saving Expert website. Someone there left a link to your blog. The first post I read here began 'I have to write a poem or poems totalling 40 lines' Let me guess. A215, Creative Writing? Me too, it is what I was trying to escape ;-) I see you also have to express every emotion in rhyme right now. It seems to be happening to all those in our group (well at least those who bother to keep in touch. Six out of 21 in our region)

Just to add to your passing on duties I'm giving you the bloggers of the World award.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for my beautiful MWAH! You are wonderful, my dear!

I can't believe I overlooked you on my blogroll. (Please forgive me. I'm trying to recreate it after losing it because I messed with my template, and I apparently left some important blogs off.) Which means that you were to be awarded one of these illustrious awards.

Sorry about the oversight!

Kisses winging their way back! Thank you.
